'Duns Hand Ba'

This is the 'Duns Hand Ba’  from 1951. At Fastern’s E’en (Shrove Tuesday), an annual street football game was played on the streets of Duns in the Scottish Borders for centuries. The game evolved into a version of handball but ceased as an activity in 1885. It was revived in 1949 as part of the Duns Summer Festival. The Hand ba’ was ‘thrown up’ by Hilda Nairn, ‘The Reiver’s Lass’ in 1951.
